Call it serendipity. Or luck. Or fate. Whatever. I’m just glad I met Mary.
I had been following the DAN protocol for four years with my son, Sean. Sean's DAN doctor then recommended we try bioset in order to help Sean tolerate new foods. In September of 2006, we started working with a bioset practiotioner who is herself the mom of an autistic son. She happened to have invited Mary over for lunch one day, right about the time I was finishing a bioset session with her. That's when I met Mary Coyle.
Mary told me about her experience with her own son, and I was really interested. But besides her story, I was so taken with Mary's personality that I just wanted to get to know her better. I started seeing Mary in December of 2006, at the Children's Excel Center, when Sean had just turned seven.
Since then, Sean has become much more aware. He's pretty social even without language, but now he's starting to speak spontaneously.
But the biggest change in Sean is that before I'd started seeing Mary, he'd been on anti-fungal for four years and we still couldn't get rid of the yeast. Every time I'd take him off the anti-fungal, he'd get behavior problems. Yet I worried that all the anti-fungal would eventually affect his liver.
Also, he was on anti-inflammatory, to which he responded somewhat. He did stop screaming, but his stools were sometimes okay and sometimes as bad as they'd been. Worse, the doctors put him on all this heavy duty stuff. Methotrexate. Pentassa. We had to check his blood and liver every month. I realized that the doctors wanted him on these drugs long term, and I was uncomfortable with that.
He just last week completely got off everything. When we tested him, his inflammation had gotten better. And his stools have gotten better, too.
The most amazing thing is that not only can he now tolerate many more foods but that behaviorally, he's willing to try new foods.
I keep getting notes from his teacher telling me that he's more social with other kids. So I'm really glad about that. Ever since I started Mary's protocol, Sean's improvement has been consistent and steady. Sometimes, there were temporary hard times, but with this protocol and with the great team at Children's Excel, I knew that the results would be great once the temporary difficulty passed.
